The novel follows Camille, a young woman who has nearly abandoned the possibility of finding love when a newcomer enters her life. Their connection develops as Camille prepares for her sister’s betrothal ball and navigates the social expectations surrounding family and courtship.
As their relationship progresses, Camille encounters circumstances that challenge her expectations for the future. The novel combines elements of historical romance, family drama, mystery, and tragedy while examining how grief and vulnerability can influence relationships and personal decisions.
Westecott drew on aspects of her own experience with loss while developing the novel. Writing became part of her creative process during a difficult period in her life as she raised her two children and adjusted to significant personal change.
One of the novel’s emotionally significant scenes, involving the discovery of a murdered father, was written around the period when Westecott learned that the father of her children had died. That experience added personal context to themes of grief and recovery already present in the story.
