TROY, MI, UNITED STATES, October 14, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Evan Shelline, a U.S. Navy SEAL veteran and the founder and president of VETTED, chaired the first meeting of the Veteran Advisory Committee at Lily Hospice on October 7, 2026. Simone Luu, RN, a former Navy Hospital Corpsman who leads the hospice’s Veteran Rapid Response program, serves as co-chair and as the committee’s clinical leader.
The committee advises Lily Hospice, a Medicare-certified hospice in Troy that serves Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties, on how it cares for veterans and their families at the end of life.
“It’s so important to honor and celebrate these veterans while they are still with us and not wait until after they’re gone,” Shelline said.
A first-of-its-kind model: a Navy SEAL chair and a veteran clinician
Lily Hospice believes the committee is the first of its kind: a hospice veteran advisory committee chaired by a Navy SEAL veteran, with a nurse who served as a Navy Hospital Corpsman as its clinical leader.
The two see veteran care from different sides. Shelline comes from outside the hospice. Through VETTED, he works every day with aging veterans and their families, many of them Korean War and Vietnam veterans who have never talked about their service. Luu is a registered nurse who cares for hospice patients and learned military medicine as a corpsman.
The pairing is deliberate. Advice from the veteran community goes straight to the clinician responsible for carrying it out at the bedside, and clinical decisions about veterans are reviewed by people who served.
“It is so important to provide informed care to our vets,” Luu said.
The committee’s veteran members served in four branches of the military: the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. It will meet every other month.
What the committee does
• Reviews how the hospice asks about military service at the first visit, so no veteran goes unrecognized.
• Advises the hospice’s Veteran Rapid Response team.
• Builds ties with VFW and American Legion posts, county veterans service offices and the VA.
• Shapes how veterans are honored while they are living, including pinning ceremonies.
• Reviews the information families receive about veterans’ end-of-life benefits.
Why it matters
Military service can shape the end of a life. Service-connected illness, memories that return near the end, and the bond between veterans all affect what good care looks like. Families also miss benefits a veteran earned, including burial in a national cemetery, a government headstone or marker, a burial flag and survivor benefits, because no one asked whether their loved one served.
About Evan Shelline
Shelline served about a decade in the U.S. Navy, including about six years with the SEAL Teams. In 2024 he founded VETTED, a service-disabled veteran-owned small business in Troy that provides in-home care for veterans in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties. He is Senior Vice Commander of Sgt. Stanley F. Romanowski VFW Post 6896 and the founder of The Veteran Muster, a veteran-only gathering organized by VETTED in senior living communities across Southeast Michigan.
